Dobro top dog Gordie Tentrees has the rugged character of his native Yukon
territory indelibly imprinted on everything he does.
In ten years, he has worked with all the solid graft of a team of Alaskan
Huskies to get his music out into the world.
And, the man has finally established himself as a major player on the circuit,
and a song-writer whose time has come.
Since the release of his critically-acclaimed Bottleneck to Wire album (2007),
he has toured relentlessly in North America, Europe and Scandinavia, building a
faithful following and steadily winning a reputation as someone, with a band
who was in the must-see category.
That band - Ken Hermanson (guitar/lap slide/banjo, Aiden Tentrees (bass) and
Patrick Hamilton (drums) - plays gritty roots music with a distinctly northern
edge and bluesy overtones. Album number 4, Naked in Scandinavia, tells it how
it is, recorded ‘live’ in Helsinki.
Gordie has built his career from the base up over the past decade, starting
from kitchen jam parties and gradually developing to tour internationally.
He has received four nominations in the Western Canadian Music Awards and been
a finalist in the International Song-writing Competition
The work schedule involves an average of 200 shows a year but still they manage
to set time aside to write and record new material.
The next studio album - North Country Heart - is set to get a worldwide release
early in 2012.
Reviewing the 2009 release, Mercy Or Sin, No Depression said it was “impossible
not to get drawn in to his world” while legendary producer Gurf Morlix said:
“These songs are as real and dusty as any unpaved roads I've ever been on”. Writing for R2 (Rock ‘n’ Reel) magazine, Jeremy Searle said it was the one on
which Gordie had found his voice and style, adding: “with this, he stakes his
claim for a place in the first team”.
He may not have struck gold yet but there’s pure 24ct promise and the race is
on.
