When you can count folks like Vassar Clements, Laura Boosinger, David Holt and the boys from hot NC band, Backstreet as fans, you don’t need us to tell you that there must be something very special going on.
The Harris Brothers - Reggie and Ryan - have been playing together now for over seventeen years and in the process, they’ve impressed some of the top pickers on the planet, including old twinkle eyes himself - Wayne Henderson.
Based out of Lenoir in western North Carolina, the duo has appeared at some of the biggest festivals after establishing themselves as the must-have act at the best venues on the circuit.
No surprise then that they got an invite to shine at Doc Watson’s legendary MerleFest, renowned for staging only the best in the business, just up the road in Wilkesboro.
When we first heard their stunning self-produced album, Suitcase Blues, the must-have button was pressed here too.
It has depth of character and polish that is rarely encountered and is ingrained with integrity just like all those greats mentioned above.
Some performers possess a natural ability to know the right covers to select. When the match is right the outcome can be totally sublime.
Trading tasty licks on guitar and smoky vocal harmonies that have earned them much respect, these good ol’ boys are making some of the finest music around
.
Their vast repertoire is brought to life through striking sibling interpretation, Reggie’s lightning-fast fingers and sultry blues licks, subtly interwoven with Ryan’s from-the-gut bass guitar lines.
The perfect mix of material is likely to recall blues greats such as Blind Boy Fuller or Etta Baker and range across tasty jazz to classy Fifties fare and rockabilly heaven as these two road-savvy pickers pull off everything with panache.
Originals are also packed inside that trademark Harris Brothers’ kick-drum suitcase.
Grammy Award-winner David Holt rates them among his favourite ‘live’ performers.
“It’s great playing, singing and soul,” he says -“It just doesn't get any better than this.” |
